Neuf Custom Furniture
How do we get started, and do you charge a consultation fee?
Getting started is simple! We begin with an initial chat to discuss your ideas, space, and budget. To move into the official design phase, we charge a $250 initial engagement fee. This fee covers a dedicated site measure (where applicable), material sampling, and the creation of detailed 3D digital concepts and itemized pricing options. When you proceed with the build, this engagement fee is fully credited toward your 50% production deposit.
Can I modify one of your existing furniture designs, or does it have to be completely bespoke?
We do both! If you love one of our signature pieces but need it 20cm longer, made from a different timber species, stained a different colour or configured with drawers instead of doors, we can easily adapt it. If you want a completely unique, one-off piece built from scratch to fit an awkward architectural nook, we can design that for you too.
What is the typical lead time for a piece of custom furniture?
Because custom furniture is handcrafted to order, it takes a little longer than mass-produced retail items. Our typical lead time ranges from 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design, our current workshop schedule, and material availability. If you are working toward a specific deadline—like a home move or a holiday—please let us know early so we can do our best to accommodate your timeline.
How do you calculate the price for custom furniture?
Our pricing is based on three main factors: the cost of your chosen premium materials (such as specific timber species or hardware), the complexity of the design engineering, and the artisan hours required to build and finish the piece. We provide a full quote upfront after our initial consultation, and once you approve it, that price is locked in—there are no hidden surprises or mid-build fees.
Do I need to pay the full amount upfront?
No. To lock in your materials and secure your spot in our workshop queue, we require a 50% non-refundable deposit once the final design designs are approved (minus your $250 engagement fee credit). The remaining 50% balance is only due once the piece is fully completed in our workshop and ready for delivery or installation.
Where do you deliver, and do you offer installation?
We service the Melbourne metropolitan area with our specialised, in-house white-glove delivery and installation service. Our team won’t just drop a crate at your door; we will safely carry the piece into your home, place it exactly where you want it, level it perfectly on your flooring, and remove all protective packaging materials when we leave. Where your piece is built in to your space, we will also fully and safely instal.
What if the furniture arrives and doesn't fit through my doorway?
Measuring your space is one of the most critical steps in the custom process. Because we service Melbourne metro, we can often assist with checking tight access points during our engagement phase. We will explicitly review your entryways, hallways, tight corners, and apartment lifts. If access looks tight, we can design the custom piece to be partially flat-packed or modular, allowing it to be safely assembled directly inside its final room.
Recycled Australian Timber
Where do you source your recycled Australian timber from?
Our timber is proudly salvaged from demolished or renovated historical structures in and around Victoria, Australia. Mainly this means breathing new life into the beautiful Australian hardwoods used in housing construction through the 19th and 20th centuries, but also includes more exotic timbers salvaged from old bridges, demolished shipping wharves, regional wool sheds, and early-century industrial warehouses. By giving these incredible hardwoods a second life, we preserve a tangible piece of Australian history in every furniture piece.
Will my furniture have visible nail holes, bolts, or defects?
Yes, and that is the beauty of it! Recycled timber features distinct character marks like old nail holes, black oxide stains from structural bolts, insect trails, and natural gum veins. We carefully fill deep structural voids to ensure a flat, hygienic surface, but we intentionally preserve and even highlight these surface markings to showcase the history of the timber and so that no two pieces are ever identical.
What are the main Australian wood species you use?
We primarily craft with premium native Australian hardwoods. Some of our favourites include:
Messmate / Victorian Ash: Ranging from warm creams to light browns, loved for its distinct, swirling detail and prominent gum veins.
Blackbutt: A beautiful, neutral light-straw timber with a straight grain that suits modern, minimalist interiors.
Spotted Gum: A striking, highly durable timber featuring rich, wavy grains and a diverse colour palette from chocolate brown to deep red-amber.
Jarrah: An iconic West Australian timber famous for its rich, deep-red hues and incredible density.
Is recycled timber completely safe and clean for indoor use?
Absolutely. Every single piece of salvaged timber we harvest goes through a rigorous conditioning process. We manually extract all old metal fasteners and deeply plane away hazardous surface residues.
Why isn't recycled timber furniture cheaper than new timber?
Our recycled timber furniture usually works out at a similar price to quality newly harvested timbers. While the raw material is salvaged, transforming old structural beams into fine furniture is labor-intensive. It requires specialised metal detectors to locate hidden spikes, manual de-nailing, precise machining to square up twisted old beams, and careful hand-sorting to match grain patterns. You are investing in intensive artisan labor, unmatched material density, and a highly sustainable manufacturing process.
Is recycled timber structurally stronger than new wood?
In many cases, yes. The timber we salvage was harvested from old-growth forests often more than a century ago and has spent decades naturally air-seasoning in buildings or infrastructure. This means the wood has already done all its major shrinking, shifting, and settling. It is incredibly dense, dimensionally stable, and far less prone to warping than younger, freshly harvested plantation timber.
How does recycled timber furniture handle the harsh Australian climate?
Because the wood is completely seasoned and stable, it handles ambient climate shifts beautifully. However, like all natural wood products, it can still react to extreme environmental changes. We highly recommend keeping your indoor furniture out of prolonged, direct Australian sunlight and away from the direct blast of split-system air conditioners or heaters to prevent uneven drying.
How do I clean and maintain my recycled timber furniture?
Day-to-day care is effortless. Simply wipe the surface with a soft microfiber cloth slightly dampened with warm water. Avoid harsh chemical sprays, bleach, or abrasive pads, which can strip away the protective oil coatings. Always use coasters or placemats for hot mugs and sweating glasses to prevent water rings.
Modern Plywood Furniture
Is plywood furniture actually durable, or is it just cheap compressed wood?
Our plywood furniture is made from premium, multi-layered hardwood plywood (like Baltic Birch), which is incredibly strong and highly resistant to warping, splitting, and cracking. It should not be confused with low-grade particle board or MDF; furniture-grade plywood is a premium, long-lasting material engineered to endure heavy daily use.
Is plywood better than solid wood?
Neither is inherently "better," but they excel in different ways. Solid wood offers traditional, natural beauty but can warp, expand, or shrink with humidity changes. Plywood is cross-grained during manufacturing, making it structurally more stable than solid wood over large surface areas (like table tops, desk surfaces or cabinetry) while remaining lighter and less prone to splitting.
Why are the layered edges of the wood visible on some of your furniture?
Exposed plywood edges are a deliberate, premium design feature celebrating the material's structural honesty. The clean, alternating layers of hardwood veneers create a modern, architectural aesthetic that distinguishes high-end ply furniture from mass-produced pieces that hide their cores under plastic edge-banding.
Does your furniture emit harmful chemicals or formaldehydes?
No. We strictly use low-emission or completely formaldehyde-free glues (certified to international safety standards like CARB Phase 2 or EPA TSCA Title VI). Our furniture is entirely safe for homes, bedrooms, and children's spaces.
What thickness of wood is used to build the furniture?
We use varying thicknesses engineered specifically for structural integrity. Typically, heavy-load surfaces like desk tops and main cabinet frames use thick 15mm to 24mm panels, while internal drawer boxes or backing elements utilise lighter 6mm to 12mm panels to reduce unnecessary weight without sacrificing strength.
Is your furniture waterproof? What happens if I spill something on it?
While our furniture uses highly moisture-resistant glues and premium topcoats, it is not completely waterproof and should not be submerged or left in standing water. Everyday spills are completely fine - just wipe them up promptly with a dry or damp cloth to protect the finish.
